Who we are
The Student Volunteer Army is a charity dedicated to creating the next generation of community.
Student Volunteer Army (SVA) is a charity dedicated to strengthening communities by empowering young people to volunteer safely, meaningfully, and together.

Founded in response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, SVA began as a grassroots student movement and has grown into a trusted national infrastructure for youth volunteering, service recognition, and community response.
Today, we support tens of thousands of students across schools and universities in New Zealand and Australia, helping them contribute to their communities, lead others, and step up when it matters most.
Volunteering is time freely given, without expectation of reward, in service to others.
When young people are trusted, supported, and recognised, they develop the confidence and capability to lead, to care, and to contribute over a lifetime.

Student Volunteer Army empowers young people to serve their communities with purpose.
By providing structure, safety, and recognition, we help transform willingness to help into lasting impact.

Volunteering is time freely given, without expectation of reward, in service to others.

When young people are trusted, supported, and recognised, they develop confidence, empathy, and leadership.
We operate through four connected pillars:
Recognition
Through the SVA Service Award, formally recognising volunteer service.
Inspiration
Making volunteering visible, valued, and socially supported.
Safe Structures
Providing guidance, training, and frameworks for student-led action.
Collective Response
Coordinating large-scale volunteer mobilisation during crises.
Together, these pillars create a national culture of service where helping others is natural, expected, and supported.
SVA exists to strengthen young people, support communities, and embed volunteering at the heart of civic life.
We enable autonomous action in everyday moments and coordinate collective response in times of crisis — building resilience, connection, and hope across generations.

Our History
On 4 September 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Canterbury, New Zealand, causing widespread damage across Ōtautahi Christchurch.
In the days that followed, 11,000 students mobilised to help with the clean-up, coordinated by founder Sam Johnson.

This moment marked the beginning of the Student Volunteer Army.
Today, SVA is a national network of tens of thousands of volunteers, driven by a simple principle: giving time freely to help others. Through programmes across primary, secondary, and tertiary education, we support young people to take action, build skills, and develop lifelong habits of service.
